Sir Roger Boyle, 1st Earl of Orrery was born on 25 April 1621 at Lismore, County Cork, Ireland .2 He was the son of Sir Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of the County of Cork and Catherine Fenton 1 He married Lady Margaret Howard , daughter of Theophilus Howard, 2nd Earl of Suffolk and Elizabeth Home , on 27 January 1640/41 at Lord Aubigny's House, Queen Street, Covent Gardens, London, England .3 He died on 16 October 1679 at age 58 at Castlemartyr, County Cork, Ireland , from gout.3 He was buried on 18 October 1679 at Youghal Abbey, Youghal, County Cork, Ireland .3
Sir Roger Boyle, 1st Earl of Orrery also went by the nick-name of Roger 'the Wise'.4 He was created 1st Lord Boyle, Baron of Broghill [Ireland] on 28 February 1627/28.1 He was invested as a Knight on 1 April 1628.2 He matriculated at Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland , in May 1630.2 He was admitted to Gray's Inn on 17 March 1635/36.2 He gained the rank of Captain in 1641 in the service of the Troop of Horse.2 Between 1641 and 1643 he distinguished himself in quelling the Irish rebellion.2 He held the office of Governor of Youghal in July 1644.2 He gained the rank of Colonel in July 1644 in the service of the Regiment of Horse.2 He gained the rank of General in January 1644/45 in the service of the Horse in Munster.2 He held the office of Master of the Ordnance [Ireland] on 21 March 1647/48.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Cork from 1654 to 1655.2 He held the office of President of the Council [Scotland] between July 1655 and August 1656.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Edinburgh between 1656 and 1658.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Arundel in 1660, in the Convention Parliament.2 He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland].2 He was a Commissioner of Government for Ireland in January 1659/60, where he favoured the Restoration.2 He was created 1st Earl of Orrery [Ireland] on 5 September 1660.5 He held the office of President of Munster from 10 October 1660 to 26 August 1672.2 He held the office of Lord Justice [Ireland] on 31 December 1660.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Arundel between 1661 and 1679.2 He held the office of Governor of County Clare from 5 February 1660/61 to 26 August 1672.2 He held the office of Constable of Limerick Castle from 9 February 1660/61 to 1679.2 He held the office of Lord Justice [Ireland] between 23 December 1661 and July 1662.2 He held the office of Sergeant-Major-General of the Army in Ireland on 22 June 1662.2 He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) from 26 May 1665 to April 1679.2 On 25 November 1669 he was impeached in the English House of Commons for high treason, but the King prorogued Parliament on 11 December, and the matter was dropped.3 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.6
He had three other daughters.7
