She was known as "Purl"...met Rutherford when he was a telegrapher in Ogle where they married and had their first daughter who died. They moved to Iowa and later to Cash, South Dakota where they homesteaded. The family story is that his folks in Iowa warned him not to move to SD but he was insistant so Grandpa Crawford went to SD and built a sod house. Purl refused to move with the children until Grandpa had built a wooden floor so that she could move their piano. My Aunt Ruth wrote an interesting account "The Song of the Meadowlark", of their homesteading experiences in SD. They took a train to Hettinga, ND and Grandpa came to pick up them and their household goods in a wagon to their claim near Cash,SD. In about 2003, I went there and received a tour by a local resident of the area which had been Cash. The town no longer exists but remains of the various sod houses may be seen by mounds of earth overgrown with more recent soil. The Crawford family moved to St. Paul, Mn. during WWI as Grandpa was offered a telegrapher job with the RR and they were considering options for the high school education for Ruth as, in South Dakota, she had to board at high school some distance away by train and became too homesick and did not stay there.
