Retired to a villa next to the monastry at Yuste in Spain. He spent his last
years there worshipping God, eating heavily, listening to music, and
dismantling and assembling mechanical clocks.

He was the son of Philip the Handsome <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_the_Handsome> and Joanna the Mad of Castile <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juana_of_Castile>. His maternal grandparents were Ferdinand II of Aragon <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferdinand_II_of_Aragon> and Isabella I of Castile <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isabella_I_of_Castile>, whose marriage had first united their territories into what is now modern Spain. His paternal grandparents were Emperor Maximilian I <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximilian_I%2C_Holy_Roman_Emperor> and Mary of Burgundy <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_of_Burgundy>. His aunt was Catherine of Aragon <Catherine of Aragon

Charles married Isabella of Portugal [15862] [MRIN: 7595], daughter of Manuel I the Fortunate of Portugal King of Portugal [15846] and Mary [15854], on 11 Mar 1526 in Seville, Spain. (Isabella of Portugal [15862] was born on 4 Oct 1503 in Ribeira Palace, Lisbon, Kingdom of Portugal and the Algarves, died on 1 May 1539 in Toledo and was buried in Escorial, Madrid, Spain.)

Charles next married Johanna Maria van der Gheynst [39556] [MRIN: 5286], daughter of Gilles Johan van der Gheynst [39557] and Johanna van der Caye van Cocambi [39575]. (Johanna Maria van der Gheynst [39556] was born c .?1500 and died on 15 Dec 1541.)
