She was born Barbara Villiers, the only child of William Villiers, 2nd Viscount Grandison <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viscount_Grandison> (making her a cousin of George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Villiers%2C_2nd_Duke_of_Buckingham>), and the heiress <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heiress> Mary Bayning, daughter of the 1st Viscounts Bayning <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viscount_Bayning>. In autumn 1643 Lord Grandison died from a wound sustained in battle, leaving his widow and daughter in straitened circumstances.
