Bessie worked as newspaper reporter for the Goshen Daily News. It is to her we owe a deep thanks for her compiling our family history. My mother and I visited her home when I was 11 in 1958. She had stacks of papers with some photocopy sheets of that day which were in the form of today's exrays. Already a reader of biographies and autobiographies, how I would read and re-read her little blue book. Later on I realized how lucky we all were as many people did not beyond their own grandparents! Bravo for Bessie and for all those who pitched in, contributed photos, and printed it!
**** Bessie Marie Cook was born in North Twp,; Female; White; #rd child born to this mother.
Mother; Bertha Whiteman age 24; resided in North Twp, ; born Ohio
Father; Edward Cook; age 28; Teacher; born in St. Joseph County
Name was changed from Vada Marie Cook to Bessie Marie Cook
About the end of August, first part of Sept., I was on my ancestry.com web site, when I typed in the name Forest Cook.{His father was Melvin - brother to William A. & Benjamin.} And I got a hit on the obit's., so I took a look....the obit was for Forest "Phil" Cook born in MI. He was the son of Forest M. & Helen Cook. I know that Melvin & Lucy had a son named Forest M. Cook, & they had lived in MI., so I found a address for a Carolyn Jean Cook (goes by Jean) the widow of Forest "Phil" Cook & wrote her a letter, thinking I would NEVER hear back from her..... while of course it turned out I was wrong......THANK GOD. Jean Cook answered me with so much NEW info. I have been trying to get everything verified, but you know how that goes.... Have verified some of it, but still looking. The information that I got from Jean, was done by her husband "Phil" & he got a lot of it from Bessie M. Cook Rothrock (she is the daughter of Edward James - brother of William A. & Benjamin) Bessie had done this family tree in 1959....
REGARDING EMMA ANN KILE/KYLE'S MOTHER'S SIDE:
Starting with Emma Ann Kile/Kyle & working BACKWARDS:
Emma Ann Kile/Kyle was born on September 23, 1841 in Ohio.
She had a twin sister JULIA A. Kile/Kyle born September 23, 1841 in Ohio - died ? in IN. Julia married LEVI (LEE) D. HIVELY born about 1841 in Ohio - died June 4, 1914 in South Bend, St. Joseph Co., IN at age 73. Parents of Levi - Father: JACOB HIVELY Mother: BARBARA WOLF. Marriages records: Julie A. Kile married Levi D. Hively September 21, 1865 in St. Joseph Co., IN. Book 5, page 298. This makes me think that the maiden name of Emma Ann & Julia A. is really spelt KILE, as both of their marriages records spells it KILE not KYLE. I'm looking for a birth record on them in OH.
Julia & Levi had two children: 1) John, 2) Maude. But MIGHT of had three children, because I found a Edward on one of the census. Still checking into that. ****** I still have no 1st name on Emma Ann & Julia's father, but have information on their mother.
Mother of Emma Ann & Julia:
OLIVE ABIGAIL KLINGAMAN (she went by Abigail or Abby/Abbe) I have come across her maiden name spelt: KLINGMAN - KLINGMAN - KLINMAN - CLINGAMAN - CLINMAN - CLINGMAN -CLINAMAN.
Abigail was born about 1815 in PA. Abigail's 1st marriage to Unknown KILE/KYLE - they had "twin" daughters Emma Ann & Julia.
Abigail's 2nd marriage to MICHAEL LONGAKER (This also has different spellings: LONACRE, LONGACKER, LAUGHONKER, LOUGHOAKER) Married about 1850.
***This was a 2nd marriage for both of them. Michael's 1st marriage to a Elizabeth who died May 5, 1849. Children from Michael's 1st marriage are: Elizabeth, Catharine (married Elijah Emerson), Adam, Henry and Anna.
Abigail & Michael had four children: Half brothers to Emma Ann & Julia. William Longaker born Aug. 11, 1851 in OH Jacob Longaker born Mar. 23, 1853 in OH David Longaker born Feb. 12, 1860 in OH (I think his birth year is wrong) John Longaker born about 1856 - died July 1, 1866 in IN
**** Information on Olive Abigail's father:
DAVID KLINGAMAN/CLINGAMAN etc... born in PA. married unknown. They had four children: 1] SAMUEL, 2] WILLIAM, 3] OLIVE ABIGAIL, 4] MARY.
1] SAMUEL KLINGAMAN married unknown had 4 sons: (1) CORNELIUS, (2) FRANKLIN, (3) JOSEPH, (4) JOHN
2] WILLIAM KLINGAMAN married unknown had 4 sons & 1 daughter: (1) DAVID, (2) WILLIAM, (3) SCHUYLER, (4) IKE, (5) JENNIE married Rensberger
3] OLIVE ABIGAIL KLINGAMAN married Kile/Kyle - Longaker
4] MARY KLINGAMAN married Ganner. ****** Information on David's father: I will type word for word from the information I received from Jean Cook.
CORNELIUS KLINGMAN - Probably born between 1750 - 1760. He came from Germany before 1776, as he served in the Revolutionary War. They first settled in Massachusetts, then later went to Pennington Twp., PA. He had two brothers, one remained in Germany and the other went to England. Cornelius had seven sons: DAVID, JOHN, JACOB, PETER, MICHAEL, CHRISTIAN and GEORGE. ------- This is also from Bessie Cook-Rothrock: KLINGAMAN HISTORY The Klingaman name came down to us with Cornelius Klingamn, from Germany. This name still exists in Germany and is spelled Klingamants. Pronunciation is Kling-ah-man. Foreign names in the United States go through two changes, either a translation, as Schwartz to Black, Weiss to White, or the spelling becomes Anglicized as Schwartz becomes Swartz or Swarts, and Weiss becomes Wise. Another change is apt to occur by spelling the German pronunciation in English. So we lost somewhere a final N from Mann because of the English spelling of 'man'. Later some Klingaman settled in a Yankee settlement and the Yankees were unable to pronounce his name correctly, saying KlingERman, which in time became the spelling there. (Yankees still say 'Idear for Idea). A man who came from Bovania, Germany, said his name was spelled Klingamann in Germany and that the Klingamanns came from Switzerland in 1650. --------
CENSUS' I HAVE FOUND: 1. Cornelius Clingaman on the 1790 PA Census, Penn (Twp?), Northampton Co.
2. David Clingaman on the 1830 OH Census, Washington Twp., Stark Co.
3. David Clingman on the 1850 OH Census, Nimishillen Twp., Stark Co. I'm not sure if this is the right David Clingaman. It lists: David age 64 born in PA Catharine age 54 born in PA Daniel age 30 born in PA Polly age 23 born in PA Catharine age 14 born in OH.
4. Michael Lonacre on the 1850 OH Census, Nimishillen Twp., Stark Co. *** The reason I could not find anything on Emma Kyle/Kile is because they have her listed under her stepfather's name!!! It lists: Michael Lonacre age 40 born in PA Abagail Lonacre age 34 born in PA Elizabeth Lonacre age 12 born in OH Catharine Lonacre age 10 born in OH "AMY" Lonacre age 8 born in OH Julia Lonacre age 8 born in OH Adam Lonacre age 4 born in OH Henry Lonacre age 2 born in OH Anna Lonacre age 10 born in OH It also states on this census that "AMY" & Julia are Twins.
5. 1860 IN Census - Union Twp., St. Joseph Co. Post Office: Lakeville (just north of LaPaz) I had a really hard time finding this one...... the way they spelt Michael's surname had lots to do with it!!!! I only found this census by finally typing in Julia Kile... It lists: M Laughonker age 54 born in Bavaria/Bayern Abagal Laughonker age 45 born in PA Julia Kile age 18 born in OH Adam Loughoaker age 18 born in OH Henry Loughoaker age 16 born in OH Anna Loughoaker age 14 born in OH Wm Loughoaker age 11 born in OH Jacob Loughoaker age 9 born in OH David Loughoaker age 7 born in OH John Loughoaker age 3 born in IN EMMA Loughoaker age 20 born in OH

I have ordered a book from IN - from a series of books: ($ 38.00 US) It's called SAINT JOSEPH CO. CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS. I ordered Volume #1, as this volume is for the Twps., of Green, Liberty & Lincoln. They have a index of the names listed on the internet and there Cook's and other members in our family listed in there. I hope it will tell me things like: Child of, Wife of, Husband of......besides their dates.
Well I think I will end right here for now.... just wait until I send you Part 2 of my new info!!! Until then....enjoy
Love Julie
