General Notes:
Nina's name is pronounced "NINE ah".
I remember many times having family dinners at Grandma and Grandpa's house on Highway 6 in Walkerton. As we got older, Grandma started making chop suey and the family really liked it. We would often play lawn darts in the yard while the men would play horse shoes. When I was little, I remember Grandpa keeping bee hives out in the far portion of the back yard. In 1976, I moved to southeast Texas, Cleveland, northeast of Houston. My town was on the way to Rockport, TX, where Grandma and Grandpa would spend their winters, so they would call me when they came into town, and we would drive the 20 miles to meet them in Brookshire Brother's (grocery store) parking lot. My son, Andy was the only great-grandchild then (1975-1976), so they had to come to see him as well as my husband and me. We didn't get much time with them, but it was always nice to spend what time we did have. When they moved back to this area, they had a little house at 906 Walnut Street, in Plymouth, IN. We would plan every year on Labor Day to go to Grandma and Grandpa's to watch the Blueberry Festival Parade and have a cookout. Grandpa died in 1988 of Alzheimer's and Grandma died in 1995. As I look back, Grandpa always seemed to have a "grouchy" disposition, but Grandma always handed it right back to him. My parents seemed be the same way, but on the lighter side. I remember grandma being hunched over with curvature of the spine and I have a mild case of it myself. She also used to shake a lot as she got older. I don't remember Grandpa's job, but was told that he was a truck driver. I do remember Grandma working at South Bend Lathe on West Sample Street. She used to walk to our house on South Main, and wait for grandpa to pick her up. Uncle Merle and Aunt Shirley lived on the corner from us then (1971). Grandma retired soon after that time. psg 7-16-2004
