Her husband was killed in the battle of Gettysburg leaving her with two small sons. Nearly broken hearted at first, she still had faith and rose above her grief, knowing that God would help her with every task. Her optimism made her life an inspiration to her friends through the years. She died at the age of 92 at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs Charles Dorn. Three other grandchildren survived her
