old me her and grandpa's parents came, with most of their village, from Germany just prior to the Civil War. Grandpa's family name was koch, but was changed when his father (or grandfather) was inducted into the army, to Cook. His father (or grandfather-I'm not sure) was discharged as Cook and that has been the family name ever since. They settled first in Indiana.

More study has shown that grandma was in error here. It may be true for her family, But Julie has records showing the family here in the early 1800's their name was Cook at that time.
