Richard Jones, 1st and last Earl of Ranelagh was educated in 1656 at Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England <pd190.htm>.1 He held the office of Governor of Roscommon Castle in 1661.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Roscommon between 1661 and 1666.1 He was invested as a Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) in 1663.1 He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland] in 1668.1 He held the office of Chancellor of the Exchequer [Ireland] between 1668 and 1674.1 He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baron Jones of Navan, co. Neath [I., 1628] on 7 January 1669/70.1 He succeeded to the title of 3rd Viscount Ranelagh [I., 1628] on 7 January 1669/70.1 He was created 1st Earl of Ranelagh [Ireland] on 11 December 1677.1 He held the office of Gentleman of the Bedchamber in 1679.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Plymouth between 1685 and 1687.1 He held the office of Paymaster-General between 1685 and 1702.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Newtown between 1689 and 1695.1 He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1691/92.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Chichester between 1695 and 1698.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Marlborough between 1698 and 1700.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for West Looe between 1701 and 1703.1 In February 1702/3 he was convicted of mis-appropriating £72,000 as Paymaster-General.1 He was Governor of Queen Anne's Bounty in 1704.1 On his death his earldom became extinct, and his other titles were dormant until 1759.1
