By his first wife Maria, Basil I had several children, including:
Symbatios, renamed Constantine (c. 865 - 3 September 879 ). Co-emperor to Basil from 6 January 868 to his death. According to George Alexandrovic Ostrogorsky <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Alexandrovi%C4%8D_Ostrogorsky>, Constantine was betrothed to Ermengard of Provence <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ermengard_of_Provence>, daughter of Louis II, Holy Roman Emperor <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_II,_Holy_Roman_Emperor> and Engelberga <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engelberga> in 869. The marrital contract was broken in 871 when relations between Basil and Louis broke down.

Maria married Basil I 'the Macedonian', Emperor of Constantinople [57266] [MRIN: 551616410], son of Konstantinos Mamikonean [58401] and Pancalo of Armenia Bagratina [58402]. (Basil I 'the Macedonian', Emperor of Constantinople [57266] was born about 811 and died on 29 Aug 886.). The cause of his death was kild in suspicious hunting accident.
