Alexander was living in 1180, referred to as Baron of the bishopric of Durham in charters; son of Romanus, styled the Knight of Hilton, who held 3 knight's fees in 1166. Legend has the Hylttons at Hartlepool in the time of King Athelstan, 300 years before the Conquest. {See "The Singular History of the Cauld Lad of Hilton: A Legend of the Hilton Family," York, England (no date or author shown - used 6/87 at Bodleian Library, Oxford).} Alexander is son of Romanus, "the Knight of Hilton."



The family of Hilton originates from Monkwearmouth on the north bank of the River Wear in Durham, England, where Hylton (Hilton) Castle still stands.
