As early as 989, Robert married the daughter of Berengar II of Italy <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berengar_II_of_Italy>, Rozala <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rozala_of_Italy>, who took the name of Susannah upon becoming Queen. She was many years his senior. Their marriage was arranged by Hugh. She was the widow of Arnulf II of Flanders <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnulf_II_of_Flanders>, with whom she had had children. Robert divorced her within a year of his father's death. He tried instead to marry Bertha <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bertha_of_Burgundy>, daughter of Conrad of Burgundy <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conrad_of_Burgundy>, around the time of his father's death. She was a widow of Odo I of Blois <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odo_I%2C_Count_of_Blois>, but was also Robert's cousin. For this reason, Pope Gregory V <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Gregory_V> refused to sanction the marriage and Robert was excommunicated. After long negotiations with Gregory's successor, Sylvester II <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Silvester_II>, the marriage was annulled. Finally, in 1001, Robert entered into his final and longest-lasting marriage: to Constance of Arles <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constance_of_Arles>, the daughter of William I of Provence </wiki/William_I_of_Provence>. She was an ambitious and scheming woman, who made life miserable for her husband by encouraging her sons to revolt against their father.
