• Acceded: Duke of Upper Lorraine, 1044. The Holy Roman Emperor Henry III authorised him to succeed his father as Duke of Upper Lorraine in 1044, but refused him the ducal title in Lower Lorraine, for he feared the power of a united duchy. ![]() Godfrey married Doda [63634] [MRIN: 551618640]. ![]() Godfrey next married Beatrice of Bar [57314] [MRIN: 13757], daughter of Frederick II Duke of Upper Lorraine [63434] and Matilde of Swabia Duchess of Swabia [63435], in 1053. (Beatrice of Bar [57314] was born about 1017, died on 18 Apr 1076 and was buried in Cathedral of Pisa.)
The elder Beatrice, in order to protect her children's inheritance, married Godfrey the Bearded , a cousin who had been Duke of Upper Lorraine before rebelling against the Emperor Henry III . The two were married in 1053 or 1054 in the church of San Pietro at Mantua by Pope Leo IX himself as he returned from a trip to Germany. |
