In 846 Gilbert abducted an unnamed daughter of Lothair and his wife Ermengarde of Tours. He took her to Aquitaine and married her in an attempt to force Lothair to reinstate him. Rösch suggests that Gilbert's wife was named Ermengarde, but there is no conclusive evidence that this is correct.
Gilbert married Ermengar de Lorraine [59703] [MRIN: 551616407], daughter of Lothair I King of Italy, Emperor of the West, Holy Roman Emp [5741] and Ermengarde of Tours [59704], in 846 in Acquitaine, France. (Ermengar de Lorraine [59703] was born about 825 and died in 849.)
