Philip and Elisabeth were childless. In 1175, Philip discovered that Elisabeth was committing adultery and had her lover, Walter de Fontaines, beaten to death. Philip then obtained complete control of her lands in Vermandois from King Louis VII of France. Philip's brothers Matthew and Peter also died without surviving children, so in 1177, before going on crusade, he designated Margaret and Baldwin as his heirs.

Philip married Elisabeth Countess of Vermandois [61813] [MRIN: 13901], daughter of Rudolph of Vermandois, Raoul I, Ralph I Count of Vermandois [29069] and Petronella (Alix) of Aquitaine [3944], in 1159. (Elisabeth Countess of Vermandois [61813] was born in 1143, died on 28 Mar 1183 in Arras and was buried in Amiens Cathedral.)

Philip next married Teresa (Matilda) of Portugal Countess of Flanders [6211] [MRIN: 2157], daughter of Afonso I of Portugal Henriques King of Portugal [5613] and Matilda of Savoy de Maurienne Queen of Portugal [5621], in 1183. (Teresa (Matilda) of Portugal Countess of Flanders [6211] was born in 1157, died on 6 May 1218 in Veurne, Flanders and was buried in Clairvaux Abbey, Aube.). The cause of her death was Drowned.
