Edgar the Peaceful King of England [5171] ²⁴

Acceded: 11 MAY 973, Bath Abbey

Reigned 959-975. The first King of a united England. He allowed his Danish
subjects to retain Danish laws. Edgar promoted a monastic revival and
encouraged trade by reforming the currency. He improved defence by organis ing
coastal naval patrols and a system for manning warships.
Although he suceeded on 1st October 959, he was not crowned until 973 beca use
St Dunstan, the Archbishop of Canterbury, disaproved of his way of life.

Edgar next married Aelfthryth (Elfrida) [5172] [MRIN: 1609], daughter of Ordgar of Devon Ealdorman of Devon [5181] and Unknown, in 964. (Aelfthryth (Elfrida) [5172] was born about 945, died on 17 Nov 1002 in Wherwell Abbey, Hampshire and was buried in Wherwell Abbey, Hampshire.)
